The Viral Ground Beef Hot Honey Bowl

There’s no doubt about it: there’s lots of useless, time wasting content on social media. It can be a total time-suck that can leave us (ironically) feeling less connected and frankly, less smart.

But on the other hand – sometimes useful, fun, delightful content makes the rounds and it lives up to the hype. A prime example: The Viral Ground Beef Hot Honey Bowl. This isn’t new – it’s been posted about and made thousands of times. And turns out, it’s delicious and totally worth whipping up in your kitchen.

I shared this viral recipe on Minnesota Live this week and even delivered some to the station where fill-in hosts Kelli Hanson and Ken Barlow gave it a thumbs up within the first couple of bites.

Viral Ground Beef Hot Honey Bowl

Gather this:

  • 1 sweet potato, peeled and chopped
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 packet taco seasoning (I like Simply Organic)
  • 1 container cottage cheese
  • 1/2 avocado per serving
  • hot honey (I like Cry Baby Craig’s)

Do this:

Line a sheet pan with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Lay the sweet potatoes in a single layer on the pan and toss with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Roast until tender and browning on the edges, about 25 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat a medium skillet over medium high heat. Add a little olive oil to the pan then the ground beef. Brown the beef, then add the tomato paste. Cook for 1 minute. Add the taco seasoning packet plus 1/3 cup of water. Lower the heat and simmer until thickened.

Build your bowls – this is enough for 4 people. Put the beef, sweet potato, cottage cheese (about 1/2 cup) and avocado in the bowl, keeping each ingredient separate. Sprinkle a little salt on the avocado and drizzle the entire bowl with hot honey.

  1. Hi! I couldn’t wait to make this. I had to improvise as I had guacamole instead of an avacado . I will be having it for breakfast tomorrow again ! So good! Gina

    • It really just depends on how much you want per person – if you did 1/4 lb ground beef and 1/2 cup cottage cheese you would serve 4 bowls with 1 lb beef and a 16 oz container of cottage cheese!
